Day +89: Still Stuck in Hospital

There was no chance of going home today. And I had so wanted to be home in my own bed tonight.

Sean's haemoglobin levels were low, as were his magnesium levels, so he needed transfusions of both. The doctors wanted to keep Sean overnight for observations after the transfusions, so the revised discharged time will be tomorrow lunch time at the earliest.

Boo.

I want to go home. I want to go home. I want to go home. I want to go home. I want to go home!

If I stomped my foot and pouted, will that be enough to get us home tonight?

If only it was that simple.

I was truly fed up with our current stint in hospital. I had anticipated a couple of nights, 3 nights tops when we were admitted last Tuesday. Here we are, 5 days later, and still there was no end in sight.

I had had enough of Kid Vampire. I had had enough of the translucent glass partitions that act as "walls". I had had enough of this noisy "garbage" ward. And I had had enough of some of the idiot nurses who were assigned to look after us.

I couldn't get to sleep last night, and it was around 3am when I finally closed my eyes and fell asleep. The nurse looking after us made a few comments about how I really needed rest, and she knew how late it was by the time I was finally tired enough to close my eyes and drift off to dreamland. So I thought it was INEXCUSABLE of the idiot nurse to wake me at 6am to ask where she should draw Sean's blood from. She couldn't decide whether she should take the blood from the central line, or if she should insert a cannula into Sean's hand to take bloods.

Seriously? Seriously??? IDIOT!

Sean has a central line, and the purpose of the central line is for the nurses to draw blood and administer IV medication. The central line eliminated the need to create a puncture in Sean's arm to insert a cannula for the drawing of bloods for tests. Somehow, the idiot nurse couldn't work this out for herself, and she felt the need to wake me to ask the most stupid question of all time.

Seriously? Seriously??? IDIOT!

Mind you, this was also the same idiot nurse who barged into our room at midnight and talked so loudly that her voice woke Sean. It took me nearly an hour to resettle Sean and get him to fall asleep again. After waking me with the stupid question, she then woke Sean to access the central lines and draw blood. Every night during our stay so far, Jonathan and I had positioned Sean's central lines to poke out of his specially altered body suits so that there was no need to move Sean to get to the lines. It seemed this particular idiot nurse wasn't happy that she was't able to access the line from the side of the cot she had chosen to station herself on, and instead of moving the trolley to the other side of the cot, she picked Sean up and repositioned him.

Seriously? Seriously??? IDIOT!

Sean and I were both exhausted by the time Jonathan arrived, with me close to tears. Jonathan took over looking after Sean and allowed me to stay in bed and sleep for a couple more hours.

We waited for the magnesium transfusion. And waited. And waited. We knew Sean needed a magnesium transfusion and a blood transfusion, and we knew the magnesium transfusion took a few hours, and we knew the blood transfusion took a few hours. We also knew Sean could not have both transfusions at the same time, as the nurses needed to monitor Sean for any adverse reactions to either of the transfusions. With time ticking on, we were getting antsy waiting for the magnesium transfusion to start.

The magnesium transfusion finally started around 1pm, and it took nearly 4 hours to transfuse. This meant the blood transfusion didn't start until nearly dinner time. The rate we were going, Sean was going to be up all night, as the blood transfusion always gave him a boost of energy that took hours to wear off. For the blood transfusion to start so late in the afternoon, it did not bode well for us with Sean expected to be bouncing off walls.

I spent the afternoon watching my latest favourite show The Block. I'd missed my show since we'd been in hospital, so I went to the website and watched the episodes from this week. Tonight was the last "room reveal" night and I wanted to see what the teams had done in the week leading up to the "room reveal". While I watched my shows, Sean napped for a while, and when he was awake, he played in the cot or sat in Jonathan's lap, so by the time the "room reveal" was shown on TV, I was all caught up.

After last night's luscious dinner from Blue Monkey Thai, we decided to go back and get more food for dinner. We chose the chilli and basil chicken, along with some pineapple fried rice and coconut prawns. Another sensational dinner - yum!

The expected burst of energy post blood transfusion was apparent after dinner, so again, I sent Jonathan home and tried to get Sean to go to sleep. As I type this, Sean is still wide awake and not showing any signs of sleepiness. I have no idea what time he will fall asleep tonight. Let's hope it's our last night in hospital!

Updated at 11.06pm

Sean has just fallen asleep. I like tonight's night nurse. She had looked after us in the past and hadn't woken Sean during the night. In fact, Steph was the angel who made Kid Vampire shut up and sleep a couple of nights ago. We should have a good night tonight.
